Cable tester

I finally got my hands on one of these last week, inspired by Cameron Gray’s video.

Sadly, the price on AliExpress seems to have climbed since he recorded that, and after being burnt by the wrong (cheaper) one being listed under that model number, I managed to find an excuse to spend someone else’s money on buying it from Amazon.

It makes hunting down incorrectly terminated jacks and faulty cables an absolute snap, and will almost immediately pay for itself if you do this stuff on a regular basis.

The “QC” function to check jack terminations is particularly handy as you don’t need to attach anything to the other end of your cable, or even have it terminated yet.

If you want my advice, don’t get electricians to do data cabling.

(Just for balance, there’s some blogging to come on me, an IT guy, doing electrics.)
