After 13 years of trouble-free service, our heating controller at church mysteriously fell off the network. What gives?

Well, after fitting RJ45 plugs to each end of a drum of Cat6, and slinging it down to the basement in a disgraceful and temporary manner, it transpires that the network cable under the floor - and an adjacent one providing a WiFi access point - has failed. The cheap continuity tester confirms that it only has two working cores out of eight.

In related news … rats were recently seen and pest control called.

Floor void

Some lucky electrician is going to have to pull floors up until the break is located!

I’m kinda hoping that before that happens, the better cheap cable tester arrives and we can see how many metres from the end the fault is.
